the dress is by guo pei who is one of the only chinese couturiers in the exhibition i think the context makes it a good choice no? i wanna hear more

well tbh i know if this was my culture i would feel uncomfortable with  non black poc wearing stuff with traditional elements tht have been fetishisized  & polarized so much tht it becomes a joke and stigma is attached 2 it when i wear like it annoys me when Ricardo shows clothes with wave caps like you see how everyone is really going up for her but everyone is paying these Chinese girls dust 

i’d definitely wanna hear from a chinese person but guo pei definitely had her pick of whom she wanted to dress for this…it gets complicated when the theme sucks and rihanna gets to showcase the most amazing work of one of the only designers in the exhibit who is actually chinese which is already fucked

yes rihanna is not chinese but she is also like the most famous person in the world and so many people are gonna learn about guo pei because of her/a red carpet look is so heavily rooted in the name brand

Chinese people’s opinions are gonna differ but as a Chinese person I’m not gonna shower Rihanna in praise for wearing a Chinese designer because this event itself is kind of exploitative I mean if there’s barely any Chinese designers involved why would anyone try to pass this event off as any sort of cultural appreciation. Nevertheless I just feel like weird and uncomfortable when Rihanna is getting the shit hyped out of her like YES the dress is beautiful the designer is talented the exposure is good but like let’s not act like people literally just came to this for the excuse to wear some brocade fabric and b orientalist as hell they don’t really care. They’re not making any sort of complex statement about cultural appropriation. also why not be praising the Chinese girls who attended this gala despite the fact that their culture is not even really being honoured at all
