I don’t believe in the ‘feminism means equal rights’ definition. Yes, women need equal rights but will that suffice? There could exist somewhere a privileged white woman who is in the position of CEO with ‘equal rights’ and ‘equal pay’ but will that mean she won’t face sexism? Will that mean comments about her clothes, her appearance, her body will not be made? Will that mean that her opinions and views will be taken just as seriously as a mans even though she is in a high position earning more than most men?
I think being a feminist means working towards changing the way men view women and changing the way women view themselves. It means unlearning gender roles that have been around for centuries. It means pointing out every tiny bit of misogyny and not just brushing it off as a ‘joke’. It so so much more than just ‘equal rights’.
